Is It Too Late For Fat Tuesday?

As usual, a day late and a dollar short, but figured I’d post anyway. I’m Jewish but should have been more worldly; I’m embarrassed to admit I didn’t know the first thing about Ash Wednesday until I was a young adult. Many years ago I was at work and told my friend Carla she had a smudge on her forehead she needed to wipe off. That’s when I learned about Ash Wednesday!

I figure today is a good day for a rerun of a prior blog comparing Mardi Gras to Carnevale. And I added some photos below so it doesn’t seem like I was just totally lazy…

I can’t get the link to work either. Definitely Zika!
I was born and raised Lutheran but I’m not a very good one. The whole Ash thing seems strange to me too. And I’ve never really “given up” anything for Lent. Guess I’m too self-indulgent for that.

In Chicago, Fat Tuesday is known as Pączki day (pronounced poonch-key; I don’t get it either). Pączkis are cream or fruit filled Polish donuts. The only thing I really know about Fat Tuesday is that it’s the last big day for sinning before Lent. I recently learned that the sinning spree begins on the Epiphany which is January 6. From what I’ve heard, one of the biggest sins is not to have any sins to confess when Lent starts. I know, weird…

The way you met Carla is exactly the same way my sister met her friend Jayne in college. They didn’t cover Ash Wednesday in yeshiva.

  4. I couldn’t get your links to work. WordPress does not like you….or maybe it’s me.

Ugh! It’s so weird-I can only like your posts from the reader, can’t do it on your actual site. But I can like other blogs on the site and not on the reader. Well since you can’t get to it I will just say that the blog post I referred back to is pretty much the most clever piece of satire ever written. You’ll have to take my word on that.
